History

The Backas Kartano is a manor located in the Pakkala area in Vantaa. The manor founded in the 17th century is known especially for its history as a production farm for the Cooperative Elanto (now HOK-Elanto) in the 20th century.

Backas is located on the King's Road on a hill that was built as a manor park. The manor was a horse farm as early as in the 17th century. The middle part of what is now the main building dates back to 1818 and the wings are from the 1840s.

The cooperative Elanto has owned the manor and its lands since 1916. The farm buildings are exceptionally beautiful. The large red brick cowsheds with special ‘manor-house roofs' are from the 1920s. On the north side of the road, there are red brick residential buildings built by Elanto.

The Tammisto nature reserve is located south of Backas. It is the only original oak wood left in the Helsinki region.
